What is a Car Oil Filter?
The main
function of your vehicle's oil filter is to filter and clean the engine
oil. Oil's ability to perform it's main functions i.e. cooling the engine
by transferring heat; sealing the gap between piston rings and cylinder
walls; absorbing contaminants; and suspending soot particles would be
compromised as the oil became saturated with the by-products of combustion.
The oil filter removes these by-products from the oil. The filter material
is usually made from synthetic fibre.
The engine's
oil pump sends the oil directly to the filter, where it enters from holes
in the perimeter of the base plate. The dirty oil is pushed under pressure
through the filter fibre material and back through the central hole, where
it goes back into the engine. Normally filters have two media types. The
primary media filters particles as small as 25-30 microns . The secondary
media can stop particles as small as 5-10 microns. Over time the build
up of suspended particles in the media will prevent the oil flowing through
the filter. A bypass valve is incorporated in the engine's filter assembly
to handle that situation, but once the oil bypasses the filter no cleaning
action takes place. The oil filter should changed before this point is
reached.

Not all oil
filters are created equal. Just because an oil filter fits and it looks
the part does not mean it is suitable for your vehicle. You may save a
few Euro by buying an inferior oil filter but the long term cost, if it
fails, would make any short term savings totally insignificant. It is
far better to spend a few extra Euro on the most suitable oil filter for
your vehicle rather than to have to pay for a new engine. Oil filters
are made to match engine requirements i.e. to maintain the appropriate
oil pressure, flow volume, pressure relief valve opening and filtration.

to work with your type of engine and oil system.
